The San Francisco Giants gave pitcher Matt Cain a big contract extension this offseason. The Giants and Cain agreed to six-year, $127.5 million contract, which, in my opinion, was not really well deserved. However, lurking in the shadows behind the Cain deal is Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Zack Greinke who will be looking for a deal quite like Cain’s.

There is a problem with Greinke getting a mega deal like Cain’s though. Greinke is inconsistent and will need to definitely step up his game in order to get some type of big money.

At one point in Greinke’s short career, he went 5-17 with the Kansas City Royals. Those 17 losses were an American League leading statistic. Then in 2009, Greinke righted the ship and went 17-10 with a 2.16 ERA and won the American League Cy Young award. In 2010, Greinke was 10-14 before being traded to the Brewers prior to the 2011 season.

He had a great season with the Brewers in 2011. He was 16-6 in 28 starts and posted a 3.83 ERA. Greinke needs to have one of those types of seasons if he is in search of finding the money pyramid at some point during the upcoming offseason.

On April 7, Greinke pitched seven innings and looked very powerful on the mound against the St. Louis Cardinals. Greinke struck out seven batters and only threw 91 pitches. His next start, Greinke looked awful. He lasted only three and two-thirds innings allowing all eight runs in the 8-0 loss to the Chicago Cubs. He threw 85 pitches in a short time.

This season Greinke is 1-1 with a 6.47 ERA and hopefully for his sake, he can right the ship again and maybe earn himself the big bucks eventually.
