New York Yankees shortstop and captain Derek Jeter will receive an honorary doctorate from Siena College during its May 13 commencement.

Siena has said that it chose to give the degree to Jeter ”in recognition of his leadership, accomplishments on the baseball field and dedication to improving the lives of young people through his Turn 2 Foundation.”

His Turn 2 foundation works to promote healthy lifestyles among children.

This will be the first honorary degree Jeter has received.

In a statement, Jeter said that he’s humbled by Siena’s decision, and he ”will cherish this degree as highly as any honor I have received or will receive.”

The Yankees will unfortunately be playing the Seattle Mariners on May 13, so Jeter will be unable to attend but is planning to have a video message played at the ceremony.

His sister, Sharlee Jeter, president of the Turn 2 Foundation, will be present to accept the honor on his behalf.

This could be the first of many honors outside of the sports world for Jeter, as Jeter is an icon all his own. The captain is known world-wide and is one of the few athletes that is recognized on and of the field, wherever he is.

That is truly something to say when the only other that comes to mind is someone like Michael Jordan.

The year has started off fantastic for Jeter as the Bronx Bombers are currently in first place in the AL East and Jeter is currently batting .366 with two home runs, four doubles, six rbi, and five runs scored.

Congratulations Derek, you are truly one of the greats.
