Oakland Athletics pitcher Brandon McCarthy has found the way to make the best of Twitter’s 140-character allotment.

Last week after a game against Anaheim he sent out this tweet:

They put two guys on the 'Kiss Cam' tonight. What hilarity!! (by hilarity I mean offensive homophobia). Enough with this stupid trend.

McCarthy, 28, is a smart cookie. He also isn’t the first to realize how terrible and homophobic this is.

A couple of years ago, gay fans in Arizona publicly expressed their discomfort when the camera zoomed in on two apparently straight men, and the pair made disgusted faces over the suggestion that they kiss. Of course, the crowd laughed. People didn’t even take a second to think, “hey, this is wrong.”

McCarthy later pointed out that the joke usually puts the two guys at the end of the routine. There is absolutely no chance it’s an attempt to include gay and lesbian couples in the ridiculousness of “Kiss Cam.”

“There’s that stupid, little comedic value of it that if you don’t really think about what it implies,” he said Tuesday. “It kind of got old on that level. Then I actually started thinking about why we were supposed to be laughing, and it bugged me.”

McCarthy brought up a great point when he later questions how MLB teams sponsor “It Gets Better” antihate campaigns and don’t get rid of this type of rude humor.

“The whole thing bugs me on a non-homophobic level, because it’s awkward,” he said. “… I just hate it.”

McCarthy said that he received a lot of appreciative feedback via Twitter but absolutely no one from MLB  has said anything regarding the tweet.

“If there are gay people who are coming to a game and seeing something like that, you can’t assume they’re comfortable with it,” he said. “If you’re even making a small group of people … feel like outcasts, then you’re going against what makes your model successful.”

Good for him. He stood up for his beliefs and I support him 100%. While I may not be gay, I surely don’t find humor in them. I have numerous friends that are openly gay and I have no problem with it. It is our choice to love who we love. It is absolutely wrong for a game that is considered “America’s Pastime” to include this during their games. We seriously need to reconsider this type of humor.

McCarthy has surely made a new fan in me tonight.

I also couldn’t help but enjoy his type of comedy seen in this tweet:

Just walked in for a steroid pee test with my shirt off and the tester laughed and said "nevermind man. I think you're good" :(
