It was a rather rough game to watch but the Baltimore Orioles were able to defeat the New York Yankees in the rubber game of a three-game series that plunged the Orioles into first place in the American League East division. The Orioles won being the pitching prowess of Jake Arrieta, who completely surprised me.

Arrieta was able to make Robinson Cano, Mark Teixeira and even Derek Jeter look foolish. His fastball topped off a 94 mph while his curveball would reach a nasty 80 mph. Arrieta was able to make Jeter struggle and finish 0-for-4 and lower his batting average back down below .400.

To me, after witnessing the dominance that Arrieta portrayed, it seems like the Orioles rotation is actually showing some promise. Arrieta lasted eight innings and did not allow a single run which lowered his ERA down to under 4.00. Arrieta also got his second win of the season improving his record to 2-2.

Between Wednesday night and Tuesday night, the Orioles outscored the Yankees 12-1 with Brian Matsuz receiving the win Tuesday. Could this mean that the young Orioles rotation is finally coming together? After what I saw Wednesday at Yankee Stadium, it sure seems like it.

Arrieta showed amazing poise and control in a brisk, chilly atmosphere. He was not able to be phased by any of the big kahunas in the Yankees batting order. He also struck out nine batters as well. The Yankees had no chance with the kind of stuff that Arrieta was throwing.

This is bound to continue. Do not be surprised if you see these young Birds take full control of the AL East by August. It is really looking up for them and they are really showing their promise. Arrieta’s performance Wednesday night confirms it.
