Colorado Rockies outfielder Carlos Gonzalez is settling into a groove at the plate and that’s bad new for opposing pitchers.

The Silver Slugger had another mediocre start to the season but has started to find his swing in the last six games and it’s coming at a great time for the Rockies. Their starting pitching has been up and down all season and they need their offense to produce game in and game out. Gonzalez has been one of those players that has stepped up, especially in his last few outings.

During the Rockies’ last six games CarGo is batting 11-23 (.478) with five home runs, 14 RBI and nine runs. He has raised his average to a season high .310 and on top of that he has hit safely and scored a run in each of those six games.

Gonzalez is finally fully healthy from a wrist ailment that plagued him most of last season and now has confidence in his hands again. He was quoted this past week saying, ”When my hands feel good, I feel like I can hit any pitch,” said Gonzalez, “It doesn’t matter what pitch they throw me. When I’m trusting my hands and I swing at balls in the strike zone, I can hit like this.”

He has been on a tear of late and no game reflected that more than his performance last Friday night against the New York Mets. CarGo went 3-6 HR and six RBI, five of which came in the Rockies’ 11-run fifth inning.

This production has been what the Rockies have been looking for since his breakout 2010 campaign where he hit .336, 34 HR and 117 RBI. That year he came in third in the NL MVP vote and won a silver slugger award.

Now, he doesn’t have as gaudy numbers as Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp but he is making an early case to be the NL MVP. If he can sustain this type of focus he will definitely be receiving votes once the end of the season rolls around.
