Panthers Rookie QB Cam Newton Claims There Is No Jersey Number Controversy With Jimmy Clausen
Not long after the 2011 NFL Draft, Carolina Panthers quarterback Jimmy Clausen made it clear that he wouldn’t give up the No. 2 jersey to Cam Newton without putting up a fight. Now, it appears the whole jersey controversy may no longer be an issue–simply because it’s not a big deal for the Heisman Trophy winner.
In an interview with the NFL Network on Friday, Newton discussed the whole jersey issue between him and Clausen–making it clear the so-called controversy isn’t a big deal to him. While Clausen wore No. 2 as a rookie last season, Newton wore the same number for Auburn as well last year–meaning one of them would have to give it up since they’re now teammates on the Panthers.
Here’s what Newton had to say during the interview courtesy of NFL.com’s Frank Tadych:
“I really don’t care. It’s just a number to me,” Newton said during the interview with NFL Network. “Gossip sells, and I understand that with people hearing I wore No. 2 in college, and Jimmy has it right now, (but) it’s not a big deal to me. I just want to get that out of the way and throw it out there. It’s not the number. It’s the person wearing it.”
Clausen and Newton are expected to provide one of the most intriguing quarterback battles once training camp rolls around (assuming the lockout ends by then). At this point, both quarterbacks seem to have just as good of a chance as the other to start for the Panthers next season, but depending on how long the lockout lasts–Clausen may have the upper edge considering he’s more familiar with the offense.

There’s no way Clausen wins the job, he’s the reason why they picked Cam Newton. At best Clausen is going to be a career backup, just like his brothers.
