The Charlotte Observer recently reported that Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll spent roughly 5 minutes at the NFL owner meetings praising Cam Newton‘s rookie year performance in a Pro-style offense.

The Seahawks recently signed Matt Flynn to a large contract, but it was Cam Newton who Carroll was studying film of this winter.

“Look out for those guys. Holy mackerel,” Carroll said. “If he can just stay out there, they’re going to be a fantastic team.”

Carroll said Newton’s success was the product of “an extraordinarily rare athlete” playing in a scheme that played to his strengths.

“They did so many things with him. He handled everything, and he came out of an offense (at Auburn) where he didn’t even call a play,” Carroll said.

“If you watched him in the early interviews, he couldn’t call a formation. ‘OK, give us your formation and a basic play.’ He couldn’t answer the question because they signaled it in and everybody got the formation,” Carroll added. “For him to come that far is only trumped by the fact that he went to Auburn and had no spring football and took over and won every game, became the Heisman Trophy winner and scored 50 touchdowns. That was the story before this latest story that was most remarkable to me.”

Carroll will hope that his starting quarterback can have anywhere close to the kind of success that Newton had his rookie year, and Cam Newton will try to avoid a sophomore slump and build on his excellent 2011 season.

This writer thinks Newton might find it difficult to have a better year statistically than last year, but if he improves on the Carolina Panthers 6 wins and leads them to the Playoffs, then Carolina fans will probably forgive him for it.

I watched CN played briefly during last year regular season but I watched him closely during the Pro-Bowl game and he looked so confident and poised. He is a very talented QB.
