Chicago Bears Defensive Coordinators
[picappgallerysingle id="2999632"]
It is ironic that the Chicago Bears are opening against he San Diego Chargers. Since the Bears fired Ron Rivera, they have been searching for a defensive coordinator. In Rivera’s last game (Super Bowl XLI), there have been many reports that Lovie Smith and Rivera had to be separated from a physical altercation because Rivera wanted to blitz the Indianapolis Colts and Smith wanted to stay back in coverage. Well considering Peyton Manning had all day to throw, I think Rivera was probably right.
Well Smith obviously wasn’t too happy about the whole situation and gave his old pal Bob Babich the job. Needless to say, two bad seasons led to Smith himself taking over the play-calling duties. How did that work out last season? Obviously not so good. Now onto the next coordinator in Rod Marinelli. Smith and Marinelli used to be on the same staff in Tampa and have some of the same defensive philosophies. The Bears originally wanted to hire Marinelli when Smith was hired but the Bucs put the kibosh on that idea.
Marinelli, also famous for being the only head coach to finish 0-16, was the defensive line coach last season (which was the position he held in Tampa before moving onto the Lions). Like Smith, he is a fan of the Cover 2 defense. While Chicago Bears fans have been upset about the results of the Chicago Bears defense, when it is run properly, it is an effective defense. However, it is supposed to protect against big plays which the Bears seem to not stop so well.
Time for my Soapbox
Why Lovie Smith has been given a free pass on firing Rivera is beyond me (and Rivera, a classy guy and a former Bear deserved to be treated with much more respect). The clown college of defense coaches since the departure of Rivera are failing at getting the job done on a regular basis. Why has the Chicago Bears defense been so mediocre to poor since Rivera has been gone? No one has really been able to answer this question besides re-arranging deck chairs on the Titanic. Just because you move things around doesn’t mean the problem is fixed. Hopefully things will get figured out this year, but I have my doubts.
