The Chicago Bears Safety Dance

I think the Chicago Bears made a huge mistake losing Danieal Manning to the Houston Texans. Manning came into his own last season and has always proven to be an excellent return man for the Chicago Bears. By all accounts, the Chicago Bears low-balled him on their offer and really never countered a higher offer from Houston.

With all of the safety issues that have plagued this team over the past few seasons, breaking up a group that was successful seems to be a not-so-wise move on the part of this organization. Along with Chris Harris (see overrated in the dictionary…he’s good but not great), the Chicago Bears safeties rarely gave up big plays last season and were dominant at times.

There’s no secret that Manning was never Lovie Smith’s favorite player. He became the starter because of Wright’s injury problems, and played quite well. But there’s a reason why the Chicago Bears didn’t find a middle-ground with Manning. Just remember, the Chicago Bears traded Chris Harris after his rookie season and how did that work out for this organization?

While everyone has the Gordon Beckham-like obsession with Major Wright, I would like to see him actually perform on the football field. All I know about him is that he’s hurt all the time (see Mike Brown). While Wright made some plays last preseason, let’s not get all of our collective pants around our ankles quite yet.

The Chicago Bears have a collection of other safety prospects including Craig Steltz and rookie Chris Conte. Steltz has shown minor flashes but like Wright seems to get hurt often. He was the talk of the preseason last year as well but disappeared after being injured.

Conte was an interesting move by the Chicago Bears. He was a late-bloomer at Cal and is considered to be a prospect. While many experts were scratching their collective heads when he was drafted in the third round, the Chicago Bears were thrilled with this pick (as teams always claim to be).

There are options here but I am not sure if these options will be a solid as Manning was last season. Only time will tell…but remember, if this doesn’t work out, you heard it here first.
