Vaughn Mclure says expect the Bears to pursue defensive end Kamerion Wimbley if the Oakland Raiders do in fact release him. The Raiders are reportedly close to cutting him. Wimbley was reportedly the Bears number 1 target heading into the 2011 off-season. However, Wimbley re-signed with the Raiders. The Bears think Wimbley is an ideal fit on the other side of Julius Peppers. Other teams that are expected to have interest in Wimbley are the San Diego Chargers, Arizona Cardinals and the New England Patriots.

Wimbley is only 28 years old and made his NFL debut in 2006 with the Cleveland Browns. Wimbley was drafted in the 1st round (pick 13) of the 2006 draft. Wimbley was eventually traded to the Oakland Raiders for a 3rd round pick (in which the Browns used to draft QB Colt McCoy) during the year 2010.

Since Wimbley has been in the league, he has played in every game during the regular season besides 2009 where he played 15 games. So … he’s a safe bet that he will be on the field and help your team win games. Last season, Wimbley had 63 tackles, 7 sacks, 1 interception and 3 pass deflections. In his career, Wimbley has a total of 369 tackles, 42.5 sacks, 8 fumbles, 2 interceptions, and 8 pass deflections.

If the Bears do sign Wimbley, he will join Israel Idonije, Corey Wooton and Julius Peppers. The Bears will also like to re-sign Amboi Okoye, but there are teams interested in him as well. If the Bears don’t sign Wimbley because he signs with another team or the Raiders change their mind and keep him (unlikely) …. the Bears will sign at least one, maybe two defensive lineman before the off-season ends.
