According to Josh McCown himself, the Bears have re-sign him to a 1 year deal. He will compete with Nate Enderle for the 3rd string QB spot. Since the Bears signed Jason Campbell to a 1 year deal worth 3.5 million to be Jay Cutler’s back-up. I’m not going to lie, but I’m surprise they did bring him back. Teams usually never have 3 QB’s active on gameday, but as you know, the Bears did need the 3rd string QB last year.

If you remember, McCown was coaching a high school football team before thee Bears gave him a call to join their team. McCown came in and was still the back-up to Caleb Hanie. But with Hanie’s poor performance, McCown was able to get into the game and didn’t played all too bad. When McCown was on the field in 2011, he threw for 414 yards. He also threw 2 touchdowns and 4 interceptions.

It’s not a bad signing for the Bears … he will join Jay Cutler, Jason Campbell and will compete with Nate Enderle for the 3rd string QB spot.

The Bears have also signed linebacker Blake Costanzo to a 2-year deal, reports Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune. Constanzo is a great special teams player and may be the main reason the Bears signed him. Costanzo will make 2 million in 2011, 2 million in 2012 and he received a 400,000 signing bonus too.

Costanzo, whom is only 27 years old, played for the San Francisco 49ers in 2011. Costanzo was signed as an undrafted free agent by the New York Jets in 2006. In his career (manly on special teams), Costanzo has 52 tackles and has forced 6 fumbles.

In another move, the Bears have signed WR/KR/PR Eric Weems to a 3-year contract. This is a move that could be signaling the end to the Corey Graham tenure in Chicago. Also, could be a move in case Johnny Knox’s recovery does not go to plan and slows down. Either way it’s a good move, especially for the already good special teams group.

Eric Weems is young too, only being 26. He was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Atlanta Falcons in 2007. When the Falcons signed Weems in 2007, Phil Emery was the Falcons director of college scouting. So .. there’s some history with him and Emery. Weems is known for his play returning punt and kicks. He has been in the top of both departments.

Let’s just hope the signing of Costanzo and Weems go better than last off-season where the Bears signed a Special Teams player. Yeah, you know … Sam Hurd who will be sentenced to jail soon.

Dave Toub is a happy man … with the signing of Costanzo and Weems to his special teams group.

News and Notes:

*One DE the Bears had interest in, has re-signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars. That player being Jeremy Mincey.
