The Chicago Bears made waves when they made a surprising pick in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft on Thursday night, taking Shea McClellin out of Boise State.

Their second round selection, however, wasn’t so controversial. The Bears made a move up in the second round, jumping to the St. Louis Rams’ spot at no. 45 overall and grabbing South Carolina wide receiver Alshon Jeffrey.

The Bears have already added to their receiving corps with the trade that brought Brandon Marshall to the Windy City. Now they add a guy like Jeffrey to the mix and are on their way to establishing a top notch group of receivers.

Jeffrey has plenty of size, standing 6’3″ and over 200 pounds. He’s not the fastest guy out there, in comparison to some of the league’s elite recevers, in fact there was a bit of talk of him projecting as a tight end prior to the combine before he shed some weight. But he has that size and the skills with the ball that could lead him to become a series threat on this Bears team. He projects to be a similar player to Marques Colston.

For the Gamecocks last season, Jeffrey caught 49 passes for over 760 yards and eight scores. His best year at USC came in 2010, when he racked up over 1500 yards receiving and nine scores.

Phil Emery has done a great job to get Jay Cutler some weapons this offseason. Adding Jeffrey and Marshall, finally a pair of receivers with size, to a group that includes Earl Bennett has the look of a very good group. Cutler has to be very excited about the guys he has to throw to the ball to next season.

Now if they could just get the big boys up front to protect him.
