Mike DiNovo-US PRESSWIRE

In a move that wasn’t overly surprising, veteran wide receiver Rashied Davis announced Wednesday that he had been cut by the Chicago Bears.

Davis did not practise yesterday and was never promised a roster spot, just an opportunity to compete for a place with the Bears this coming season. Although the release of Davis is being packaged as an event that is happening due to injury, the likelihood of him making the team was already very slim.

Davis was only brought into the fold at the start of preseason on August 6th, after WR Devin Thomas retired from the league. He was brought in mainly for his Special Teams prowess carving a career for himself in the league as a four-phase Special Teams Contributor. Davis is in his eighth year in the league, he played his first six seasons in Chicago before a brief spell with the Detroit Lions in the 2011 season.

Davis was always going to have a difficult time making the team, especially after rookie GM Phil Emery has moved so rigorously to improve the strength and depth of the position.

This move by the Bears seems to have assured Dane Sanzenbacher a spot on the 53 man roster for the up and coming season. It is no secret that Jay Cutler likes having Sanzenbacher around. He has commented on more than one occasion that it would be a difficult decision for the Bears to cut the first year pro out of Ohio State.

Sanzenbacher has made much more of an appearance on Special Teams so far this season. It seems week by week that he is forging a solid spot for himself on this unit.

I would have to say from watching the preseason games more than once, neither of the two have particularly stood out as light-years ahead of the other in terms of production and use to the team.

It should however be noted that Davis had a few drop passes in the last preseason game against the New York Giants.

With the NFL roster cuts week in full swing, the Bears squad now sits at 74 men. They must cut at least another 21 men by 9pm ET this Friday in order to comply with the NFL’ 53 man roster limit for the coming season.
