Daniel Carcillo Out For The Year With Torn ACL

Back on January 2nd, Daniel Carcillo laid one of the more destructive hits we will see in the NHL for some time when he made an incredibly stupid decision to drive Edmonton Oilers defenseman Tom Gilbert into the boards.

In the second period of that Blackhawks’ recent 4-3 loss to the Oilers, Carcillo chucked Gilbert into the end boards as the two were both going for the puck, receiving a major penalty and a game misconduct. Gilbert has yet to play since taking the hit.

That hit also resulted in a seven-game suspension for Carcillo, which he has already begun serving for the Hawks. Of course, he’ll be serving a great deal more games than just the seven after the injury he suffered on his own hit.

As was speculated, it is now confirmed that Carcillo has a torn ACL and will miss the entire season. Recovery is expected to take at least six months.

The Hawks have been without Carcillo in the lineup since then and have gone 2-2-1. His injury opened up an opportunity for the gritty Andrew Shaw, who has performed very well since his call up from Rockford.

Carcillo signed a one-year deal in the offseason and got off to a decent start, spending much of his time playing in the Hawks’ top six and proving to be an asset to the team. But that ‘bad’ Carcillo that has built up a reputation throughout the league has shown up from time to time and he is now paying the price.

It will be interesting to see if we’ve seen the last of Dan Carcillo in a Blackhawks sweater. Some hope to have the physical forward back next season, while others have assumed that he will be donning a new uniform next season.
