We’re winding down in the NHL’s regular season, and several teams have already clinched playoff berths, though there are a few that are going to come down to the wire.

In the Western Conference, four teams have clinched playoff spots, with the 1, 2, 4, and 5 seeds having been essentially decided. The Pacific Division is still very up for grabs, but there’s an opportunity for another team to clinch a berth on Thursday.

When they hit the ice against the St. Louis Blues on Thursday night, the Chicago Blackhawks will be going for more than just the two points. They’ll be going for two points that would put them in the playoffs.

The Hawks will meet the Blues for the fourth time since the end of February, going 2-1-0 against them over that span, with one of the wins coming in the shootout. St. Louis is making a run for the Presidents Trophy, and the Hawks can join them by locking down a spot in the postseason.

The reason they’ll be able to do so is because of the situation with the Pacific Divison. The division’s top four teams are fighting for three spots, one of which will be the no. 3 seed for the division winner. That just leaves two spots for the other three.

Between the Dallas Stars, LA Kings, San Jose Sharks, and Phoenix Coyotes, they all play each other enough before the season ends that not all of them would be able to jump the Hawks. The Hawks also have a ROW of 37, which is well above any of them. But the one thing the Hawks need on Thursday is a Sharks win over the Coyotes, which would give them a lock.

If they get that, they’re in immediately. If the Coyotes end up winning, then the Hawks would be just a single point out of grabbing a spot, assuming they can get two against St. Louis on Thursday.

Given all of the injuries and inconsistency that the Hawks have dealt with in the second half of the season, it’s impressive that they could lock down a spot in the playoffs, and avoid the drama of last season. Of course, doing it against the Blues will be easier said than done.
