The Cubs Eyeing Zack Greinke This Offseason?
[picappgallerysingle id="9404803"]Zack Greinke might be asking his way out of Kansas City this offseason. There are reports starting to surface that last years Cy Young winner is starting to grow weary of the consistent losing, and seemingly always rebuilding. If the Royals make him available this off season the way we’ve seen several big named pitchers traded over the last 18 months- things could get pretty interested.
I’m sure several teams would be interested in Greinke, but look no further than the Chicago Cubs as a team that will be able to make a big play for the hard throwing right hander. The Chicago Cubs have one of the better farm systems in baseball after several years of rebuilding through the draft, and I believe they could put together a trade offer that could entice Kansas City to make a move.
Lets start off with Andrew Cashner. Being the best prospect on the mound we have, he would likely be the center piece. Cashner is a hard thrower like Greinke, but tends to lose his command at times, and still needs development on a third pitch- but the upside is there for Cashner to turn into a top of the rotation starter. Another name that would likely be talked about would be future middle infielder Hak Ju Lee. Lee was selected to play in the futures game during this years all star break, and he’s slated to be a lead off speedster at the top. I don’t think Mike Aviles is the answer there for the long term- so Hak Ju Lee could be a name the Cubs could give up- especially with the emergence of Starlin Castro. From there- you could talk about 5 names that could be traded. Chris Archer, Thomas Diamond, Jay Jackson, Brett Jackson, Kenneth McNutt, and Luis Liria.
If I’m Jim Hendry, I don’t think I part with Cashner AND Archer/McNutt, but would be more willing to part with Jackson and Cashner with Hak Ju Lee and a lower level position player/pitcher. A package like that would definitely make Dayton Moore think about moving his young ace, who they might not even get top production out of if he’s unhappy.
A trade like this would immediately put the Cubs back on the map for next year, but would still need to add several different pieces to make them a top contender once again. They aren’t far away, and they have the resources to do so- just a matter of putting together the packages, and moving some of your dead money.
