It’s Not Your Fault Steve; A Cub Fan’s Response to “Catching Hell”

I’m currently watching the 30/30 on ESPN- Catching Hell about the Steve Bartman moment in game 6 of the 2003 NLCS between the Chicago Cubs and Florida Marlins.

I love the Cubs more than any team, and I have never been more ashamed of being a Cubs fan. I remember watching that game and I was very upset as every other Cubs fan…but I was upset at these things.

1) Dusty Baker allowing Mark Prior to throw 130 pitches in a game 1 blowout. Which led to:

2) Dusty Baker allowing Prior to try and pitch his way out of a jam in the 8th- when it was clear he was out of gas.

3) Alex Gonzalez booting a ground ball which should have been a tailor made double play.

When I went to school the next day, every Cub fan was blaming Steve Bartman. I wanted to fight everyone that thought it was his fault because that just shows the worst knowledge of this great game. Steve Bartman was not at fault. Period. End of Story. Anyone that thinks so? Needs to find another sport to watch because it absolutely disgusts me.

ESPN had to find the biggest idiots to interview during the documentary. There was one “fan” whom still thinks it’s funny that he tried to attack Bartman- and to that fan? What a jackass. I’m sorry if that offends a reader but there is no other word for him. The fact this is still a story? Makes me sick. The Cubs are not cursed- they’re poorly run from bottom to top. This is not Steve Bartman’s fault. Any Cub fan that thinks it is  needs to root for the White Sox. The fact that ESPN has shown the true colors of many Cub fans to the rest of the world makes me sick because I am now forever joined at the hip to these idiots that call themselves Cubs fans.

I still am saddened for Steve Bartman. I’m saddened that Rod Blag….however the heck you spell Illinois’s former governor (who is facing a long sentence for multiple crimes) went on public TV and said he would never pardon Bartman. I’m saddened that the entire crowd was chanting a derogatory name at Steve Bartman for doing something everyone else would have tried to do- me included… Catch a ball coming at you. I’m saddened that Fox and ESPN set out to ruin this guy’s life by continuously turning this into a huge story- when it was a non story. I’m saddened that the Sun Times published information about Steve Bartman. I’m saddened that people ruined this guy’s life over a game. Over a moment that wasn’t his fault.

Steve Bartman is a good person who went out of his way to help his community in multiple faucets. Steve Bartman was made a martyr for no reason because people fail to see the truth. Baseball fans are stupid- Cub fans are worse. I’m ashamed to call myself a Cubs fan.

You know what I would love to do? Catch a beer with Steve Bartman and watch our Cubbies battle in 2012. Why? Because it’s not Steve Bartman’s fault.

I’m sorry that the Chicago Cubs fanbase have tried to ruin your life Steve. At least this Cub fan knows the truth….it’s not your fault.

One Rant to “It’s Not Your Fault Steve; A Cub Fan’s...”

  1. SalukiHawk says:

Here’s the thing Brett–I think most Cub fans think the way you do. I personally don’t know any who still hold a grudge against Bartman, and I know few who ever did. I really think this was a media concoction and of course they were able to find a few idiot fans and unfortunate clips to make a “story.” I am 100% with you on your Prior/Gonzalez analysis. I remember seeing shots of the team after the incident and the whole team seemed to just tense up and get this “deer in headlights” look. Dusty should have used his bullpen, and Gonzalez should have scooped up the ball at short.
