We don’t know much about the bid the Chicago Cubs submitted for the negotiating rights to Nippon Ham Fighters pitcher Yu Darvish. The only thing anyone seemingly agrees on is that the Cubs submitted a bid. Rumors have swirled around the Internet and Twitter today with commentators ranging from declaring the Cubs the favorites to land the right-hander, to Chicago being outbid by Toronto or Texas. The Blue Jays are a real dark horse here. They typically have not been huge free agent spenders, other than the JP Ricciardi years, and from my recollection haven’t been heavily involved with Japanese players in general. If Darvish is as good as advertised and ends up in Toronto he could help shift the balance of power in the AL East. Given Albert Pujols’ departure from St. Louis and the expected exodus of Prince Fielder from Milwaukee the addition of Darvish could put the Cubs right in the thick of things in the NL Central in 2012. If Chicago does win the bidding for Darvish it’s likely that Matt Garza will be taken off the trade block. Right now we’re in a wait and see mode. The only thing we’re sure of is that no one is sure of anything.
