The Chicago Cubs appear to be entering a full rebuilding period. The trade of Sean Marshall to Cincinnati is likely just the first step in the process. The departure of Carlos Pena and Chicago’s seeming disinterest in Prince Fielder leaves first base in Wrigley without an tennant.

Bryan LaHair, who played briefly in Chicago in 2011, has been doing his best in the Venezuelan Winter League to garner the attention of the Cubs revamped front office. LaHair had a stellar season for AAA Iowa in 2011 hitting 38 home runs, driving in 109, and posting a 1.070 OPS in 129 games. He continued his hot after a callup to the Cubs where he two more home runs and six RBI in 59 at at bats. LaHair hasn’t slowed down one bit in Venezuela. Through 43 games the first baseman has hit 14 home runs to go with 27 RBI and a .966 OPS. The only downside to LaHair’s performance is his 50 strikeouts in 157 at bats.

LaHair has certainly earned the chance to compete for playing time with Chicago in Spring Training. The 29 year old Minor League veteran offers new Manager Dale Sveum the versatility to play first base or corner outfield. Given the upheaval that could be coming soon to Wrigley Field Bryan LaHair should find himself at first base, left field, right field or the Cubs bench on Opening Day.
