Long time Chicago Cubs fan Bill Murray had the honor of throwing out the first pitch Thursday for opening day. A normally routine tradition, was anything but that, as Murray decided to shake things up a bit…

This video is classic Bill Murray to say the least.

In addition to rounding the bases and throwing out the first pitch, Murray also led the crowd in the 7th inning stretch. Murray is about the best guy a fan could ask for to open the season, as he brings a lot of excitement to the table.

The outcome of the Cubs season opener however, was certainly not what fans were asking for. The Cubs allowed two late inning runs, and lost 2-1 to the Washington Nationals.

It may be the start of a new era in Chicago, but it certainly didn’t feel that way Thursday. To say that the outcome of this one was ‘typical Cubs,’ would certainly be an understatement.

Over the past several years specifically, it seems the Cubs can’t ever win close low scoring affairs. If their starting pitching does their job, the bullpen can’t close it out. If the other team answers late, we can’t seem to answer back. Today was all to familiar to Cubs’ fans.

My expectations are not set high for this season, and no one’s should be. This team is far from thrown together, but it’s also not Theo Epstein’s ideal lineup either.

Regardless, I will still watch every game, and stay optimistic about the Cubs this season. Why? I just can’t help it…
