The Chicago Cubs rallied in the bottom of the 9th inning to force extras, and eventually walked off with a win Sunday over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

It was looking bleak for the Cubs in the 9th, until Ian Stewart got aboard with one out. David DeJesus then reached on a walk, setting the stage for Tony Campana. Campana delivered big with triple that almost scored the game winning run. Stewart easily scored from 2nd, but DeJesus was thrown out at the plate on a close call. Initially it looked like the umpire blew the call after the catcher dropped the ball, but upon review, he got it right.

DeJesus drew a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the 11th to bring in the game winning run.

Today was also the debut for the Cubs’ new left handed pitcher, Travis Wood. Wood was solid in his debut, going 6 innings, with 3 earned runs, and 4 strikeouts. He did give up 3 walks and a home run, but considering his struggles in Spring Training and Triple A, I’m very happy with this outing.

Wood also contributed at the plate going 2 for 2, with a run scored.

My big takeaway from this game, was the clutch game tying triple by Tony Campana. So far this year he’s hitting .325, but has looked lost at the plate on occasion as well. It’s great to see him perform in the clutch, which will only build his confidence, and get him more at bats. Campana has every tool a baseball player could want, except for the stick. If he continues to improve, Cubs’ fans will be seeing a lot more of him this season, something I would be in favor of.

This Day in Cubs History: Kerry Wood threw his 20 strikeout game against the Houston Astros, May 6, 1998.
