White Sox Sweep The Indians, Steal Manny’s Spotlight For Second Straight Game
It appears as if the White Sox are trying to show Manny Ramirez that they don’t need him and they beat the Indians 6-4 for the 3 game sweep.
White Sox starter Freddy Garcia started off the game well but left after just 4 innings due to stiffness in his lower back. The injury is not believed to be serious but it may be the starting signs of his body wearing down. In his 4 innings, he gave up 2 runs on 4 hits (1 earned run), so he was in control of the game. Tony Pena came into the game in relief of Garcia and went 3 innings, giving up 2 runs, also 1 earned, on 5 hits. Sergio Santos came into the game in the 8th and pitched a scoreless inning, giving up just 1 hit. Rookie Chris Sale earned his 1st save of the season and his career pitching a scoreless 9th giving up just 2 walks.
The White Sox offense had to pull out another come from behind victory and did so in the face of Manny Ramirez for the second straight game. The White Sox got on the board in the 1st off of a solo homer by Alex Rios, his 20th of the year, to give the White Sox the 1-0 lead. The Indians then scored 4 runs between the 3rd, 4th, and 5th innings off of three RBI singles by Asdrubal Cabrera, Jordan Brown, and Jayson Nix and a run scoring double play by Asdrubal Cabrera.
The White Sox didn’t start the rally until the 8th inning. Alexei Ramirez hit a solo homer, his 16th of the year, and brought the White Sox within 2 runs. Juan Pierre and Alex Rios both got on base and with Manny Ramirez on deck, for the second night in a row the White Sox blasted a 3 run homer to give the White Sox the lead. Paul Konerko was the recipient of the homer, his 33rd of the year, and that gave the White Sox the 5-4 lead.
The White Sox tacked on an insurance run in the 9th on a sac fly by Alexei Ramirez.
Manny Ramirez’s return to the AL was nothing spectacular as he went 1-3 with a bloop single and a strikeout and was also hit by a pitch. It’s not the most impressive start but he did strike enough fear being in the on deck circle that Konerko got a pitch he could hit out of the park.
So the White Sox sweep the Indians and start off this 10 game road trip 3-0. It’s the best possible outcome to start it off, especially since we have had so many problems against the Indians this year.
The White Sox now start a 3 game weekend series with the Boston Red Sox. It’s going to be a lot more challenging against the Red Sox than the Indians but at least the focus won’t be on how the team plays, it will be on Manny returning to Boston again.
