Mark Buehrle Continues His Dominance Against NL Teams

If Mark Buehrle ever got to pitch for a National League team I think he would win the NL Cy Young award. Okay, maybe I won’t go that far, but Buehrle is one of the all time best pitchers in interleague play. On Wednesday night Buehrle went for his 25th win against interleague opponents but fell short after giving up just two solo homeruns and leaving with the game tied.

After a rough April of posting a record of 1-3 with an ERA of 5.12, Buehrle has pitching fantastic going 5-2 since then with an ERA of 2.57 in May and 3.20 in June. In fact, he has not given up more than 3 runs since giving up 6 against the Tigers on April 22nd. That’s 10 of 11 quality starts. Buehrle has always been a pitcher that keeps the White Sox in the game and has either been the bad luck loser receiving no run support or receiving a no decision.

Buehrle has been quoted to say that he wouldn’t mind hanging up his glove and retiring when he becomes a free agent. Listening to him on many interviews, Buehrle is a guy who loves his offseason spending time with his family and hunting. When you look at his resumè, Buehrle has a slew of All-Star appearances, two no hitters, one of them being a perfect game, a gold glove, and the ultimate prize: a World Series ring. When you think about it, what else does Buehrle have to accomplish? A Cy Young award does not really seem likely with the way he isn’t really a power pitcher with eye popping stats. He is a pitcher that pitches to contact, and relies heavily on his defense. He could always add more gold gloves to his trophy closet, and every baseball player wants more World Series rings. I know Buehrle has said that if he does continue to play he would like to finish his career as a member of the White Sox. I definitely think that he does deserve one more solid contract from the Sox as many Sox fans would agree that over his time in Chicago he has become one of the faces of the franchise.

It’s too bad that he won’t pitch against any other National League teams this season, but I hope that his string of great performances keeps up and the bats heat up to back him in his efforts.

I could see him retiring as a Cardinal.
