White Sox Need To Move On From Buehrle

There’s a point in every one’s life when they need to let something go. It might be as little as a game, or as much as a loved one. Time evolves and things change. For the past decade, Mark Buehrle has been a constant for the White Sox. For every fifth day Mark Buehrle was going to go to work. It’s hard to imagine the day where Mark Buehrle isn’t pitching every fifth day, but both need a mutual separation.

I feel that if Buehrle does come back to the Sox, it will feel like a marriage that stays together for the kids. We need to look at this subjectively with no bias and just numbers.

Buehrle was one of four White Sox pitchers that earned over 3 WAR last season according to Fangraphs. If Buehrle is let go, the Sox don’t necessarily have to trade Danks or Floyd. They could put out a rotation of Danks-Floyd-Sale-Peavy-Humber and not miss a beat. Chris Sale would be every bit as good as Buehrle, if not better than Buehrle. More numbers to consider, Buehrle would easily make 10M+ which would put the Sox at their limit. The payroll number is unknown, but Kenny Williams said it would definitely be lower than last year. The White Sox do not need to get in a bidding war for Buehrle.

I hope Kenny Williams doesn’t get fixated on the biases for Buehrle, but looks at this objectively. The White Sox need to move on. Buehrle isn’t in the long-term plans for the White Sox, nor should Buehrle want to be in the long-term plans for the White Sox. Mark Buehrle has done everything a pitcher can possible do for one team sans winning a Cy Young.

I love Mark Buehrle. However, two more seasons with Mark Buehrle at 10M+ a year isn’t going to accomplish anything. Then in two years you are at the same position again contemplating if you want to re-sign Mark Buehrle. Pitching is not the White Sox problem. Pitching likely won’t be one of their problems next year with or without Buehrle.

I think White Sox fans need to take the memories of Buehrle and put them aside. I’m not saying to forget the gold glove plays, the World Series save, or the homer in Milwaukee. Just put them aside. Take a deep breath and say these words. “We will be fine without Mark Buehrle,” because the Sox will be. Unless he is wearing that hideous Miami Marlins uniform.
