The Chicago White Sox came into Wrigley Field today with a record of 18-21 and 4.5 games behind the Cleveland Indians.  The Chicago Cubs come in with the second worst record in the NL at 15-23. Today’s match up was started by Phil Humber for the White Sox and Jeff Samardzija for the Cubs.

The Sox got things going quickly in the first inning on a 2 run home run by Paul Konerko, scoring Gordon Beckham who had an infield single.  The Cubs came right back and scored a run on a sacrifice fly by Starlin Castro scoring David DeJesus.  In the top of the third inning Samardzija hit Konerko in the face with a pitch knocking him out of the game.  Humber took exception and threw at Cubs first baseman Bryan LaHair.  It was a pitch that ended up going behind LaHair up around his shoulders.  Both teams were warned by home plate umpire Tim Timmons.

After that, both pitchers settled down until Humber put guys at 2nd and 3rd with one out in the bottom of the 7th.  Reliever Matt Thornton came in and gave up a single to Samardzija scoring Ian Stewart.  But then got a pop up and a ground out to end the inning tied at two.

Then Gordon Beckham came up in the bottom of the eighth with Samardzija still pitching and took him out over the left field wall.  Chicago Cubs reliever Kerry Wood announced today that today’s game would be his last of his career.  He came in

New White Sox closer Addison Reed came in and had a 1-2-3 inning all set with a fly ball to Alex Rios in right field, when Rios lost the ball in the sun.  But Reed came right back and struck out Reed Johnson to end the game.

Overall, this was a nicely pitched game by both starting pitchers with the White Sox just getting one more run in the end.  The starters tomorrow will be John Danks for the White Sox and Ryan Dempster for the Cubs.
