Cincinnati Reds Made the Right Decision to Go With Ryan Madson
As you have probably heard by now, the Cincinnati Reds came to an agreement with closer Ryan Madson yesterday. The deal is worth at least $8.5 million over one year and possibly as much as $17 million over two years. Ryan Madson will replace Francisco Cordero in the ninth inning this season for the Cincinnati Reds and I think the Queen City (not to be confused with Charlotte, NC) is better for it. Even though it is hard to argue with the 2.45 ERA and 37 saves Francisco Cordero produced in 2011, I have never been his biggest fan. I just can’t get on board with closers that make a habit of making you sweat in the final frame (his FIP was actually 4.02 by the way). Experience isn’t exactly on Ryan Madson’s side as he has only 52 saves in his career, but I am confident he can maintain the strong numbers he put up this past season (2.37 ERA/2.25 FIP, 32 saves) and be a big contributor to what I think could be a playoff team in 2012.
