The Cincinnati Reds’ pick in the third round of the 2011 amateur draft has turned out to be a great find for the organization.

Tony Cingrani, the 6.0 ft, 200 lbs. left hander,  spent two years with Rice University mostly in the closer position when the Cincinnati Reds came calling and wanting his services.  In the 2011 season for Rice, Cingrani had a 4-2 record to go with 12 saves in 57 innings of work for the Owls.  More impressive, though, was his 1.74 ERA and 66 strikeouts.  In the world of metal bats, that is a great ERA.  It is especially good when you consider that the Rice program is one of the elite programs in college baseball.

Right now the Cincinnati Reds have him pitching in the Class A Advanced California League for the Bakersfield Blaze.  He has been moved to the starting pitching role for the Reds’ organization and is not disappointing them in the least.

Cingrani (doesn’t that sound like a Cincinnati Reds’ guy) boasts a 3-1 record as a starter for the Blaze.  He has a miniscule ERA of 0.32.  Cingrani has appeared in 5 games, thrown 28 innings, allowed 1 earned run and has a staggering 37 strikeouts.

Cingrani has not allowed a run in the last 18 innings of work.  During that same span he has struck out 26.

Granted, for you Cincinnati Reds fans, he is only pitching at A level right now; however, the tall 22 year-old lefthander will most certainly be moving up the farm system quickly if he keeps producing at this rate.  He has a mid-90s fastball and a change-up with a slider that is in the works.

Given his experience in the college ranks, I believe he is on the fast track to the show.  In this short period of work in the minors, Cingrani has moved up to the Cincinnati Reds’ No. 14 prospect and No. 2 for left-handed pitchers.

Keep an eye out for him.  You may be cheering him on in GABP before you know it.
