Is Colt McCoy’s career in Cleveland over before it started?
[picappgallerysingle id="8673517"]
Many Cleveland Browns fans were excited when the Browns were able to land QB Colt McCoy in this past years draft, but is his career over in Cleveland before it has a chance to begin? The Cleveland Plain Dealer is reporting that McCoy is one of 8 players which are on the bubble right now to be cut outright. According to the report, RB James Davis is on the list as well.
Now McCoy has been dealing with a sprained thumb and the leaking of this news to the newspaper might be the Browns simply wanting to light a fire under McCoy, I certainly couldn’t imagine the Browns giving up on McCoy after just two games.
During Brown’s OTA’s this summer, McCoy was said to have looked good, and the plan all along was to bring McCoy along slowly.Browns president Mike Holmgren said during the off season that he had no plans to play McCoy this season.
It was widely speculated prior to the draft that Cleveland would be the best place for McCoy to land with the Browns running a west coast style offense, McCoy’s questionable arm strength but good accuracy. He has failed to showcase any of that in the pre-season so far but I can’t imagine giving up on McCoy so soon. Veteran Jake Delhomme has looked good so far as well as Seneca Wallace but why would you simply toss aside someone like a Colt McCoy after only a couple games?
Rest assured that if the decision is from Eric Mangini, it will have to be signed off on by Holmgren, and given his track record for developing quarterbacks, if Holmgren okays his release, it was a wasted draft pick. However, I think this move is being pulled simply to light a fire under McCoy. If not, what a waste of a pick.

I did not know there was any hype surrounding Colt McCoy. Oh Well!
I am a huge Pats fan right off…but ev en still a huge football fan. I have foolowed the career of both running backs James Davis and C.J. Spiller. Believe me Browns fans, I know you have a crowded backfield with some excellent talent. If you guys give up on James Davis, he will be scooped up IMMEDIATELY by another team and it will bite the Browns in the ass because I truly believe that Davis has pro talent. Its like when the Pats let the jets steal Curtis Martin away even tho he was rookie of the year his first yr. They knew he was talented but dropped the ball on knoiwing the extent of his talent. Please Browns fans…pray that they don’t let James Davis slip out of ur grasp, seriously! Given the carries, he will explode into a superstar.
C.J. Spiller was back up to …..James Davis when they wer both at Clemson. you heard it here first my fellow AFC friends. it will be a regretable move.
not really sure how, even if he is cut, its a waste of a pick… esp. when we have waster waaaaay more on way less… Brady Quinn being the most recent.
Get rid of the white trash
If the Browns cut Colt McCoy, it will be a big mistake. There’s no question he needs to develop, but he has such tremendous upside. He is so much like Drew Brees out of College, even an early Steve Young. Even if he were to get cut, I guarantee you he gets immediately claimed off waivers by someone else.
@Jon, real classy..
No one on twitter can confirm this story, not Adam Schefter, anyone from the NFL Live crew, no one. So until the insiders confirm, can’t make much of it.
@DennisPatriot, you are right, James Davis would be picked up IMMEDIATELY. A freak injury sidelined him last year, but that 1-2 punch @Clemson with Spiller wasn’t some hoax.
Well it’s VERY APPARENT to me that the browns have TOTALLY GIVEN UP on moving forward in all effectiveness by the fact that they have decided to go “WEST COAST” offense rather than “BRINGIN DA WOOD” in a division that (other than the bengals-who are ALL AIR) has been known for it’s SMASH MOUTH ground attack for years!
Now don’t get me wrong, if the change ACTUALLY WORKS, then GO FOR IT, but if not then if it ain’t broke why fix it? It’s no wonder that we never go anyplace and get worse every single year from antics like this!
Lets just make up our mind who we are going to be and stick with it and then get ourselves a ring FINALLY!
After having been burned by young QBs for years who don’t pan out, perhaps the Browns have finally learned their lesson.
I love how everyone jumps on that “bandwagon” of lets put all the bad performance on the QB. When in all reality, doesn’t the line make up the foundation of the offense. How is the QB help responsible for the whole team? Isn’t there about 60 other players, and a coach involved here? Anyone in there right mind would know that your QB is only as good as his line protects him. Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, you think these guys would be as good as they are if they didn’t have all the time in the world…..because of hint hint protection. Lets start there.
You are so right. McCoy took UT to the Campionship game. That shows what a good Defensive Line can do for you!
Is anyone surprised that McCoy is almost on his way out? He has the brains of a brick. He’s a bust at best.
He isn’t NFL material anyway.
It wont happen..although I am starting to wonder just how close Ratliff and Mangini are. I think they have manlove for each other
This further validates the ineptitude of the Browns.
Send Colt back to TX. We’ll groom him in an NFL environment, and let him lead the Cowboys or Texans to a Super Bowl.
“White trash”…”Brains of a brick”. You people obviously know nothing about Colt.
Colt is a leader on and off the field, and his character is second to none.
You don’t deserve Colt.
Maybe Cleveland should just give up on the practice of drafting QB’s. Obviously they’re not that good!
He is a few inches shorter than optimal, and he can’t take a hit. There is no hype there lol. Him and Bradford will be washouts, the Big 12 defenses do not hit hard enough or play hard enough to prepare their players for the NFL. This is what a primadonna looks like, Texas and Oklahoma need to be careful before they get categorized with the likes of USC and Ohio State–just spoiled primadonnas who think they are entitled to NFL careers more than really earning or deserving them. i would bet that any QB in the SEC would be a better draft pick, you know they are tough no question
Big 12 defenses don’t hit hard enough or play hard enough? Obviously you haven’t looked at the Longhorns in the NFL? Not to mention the Sooners. Derrick Johnson – KC, Cedric Griffin – Vikes, Aaron Ross – Giants, Michael Huff – Raiders, Casey Hampton – Steelers, Quentin Jammer & Nathan Vasher – Chargers, Michael Griffin – Titans, Brian Orakpo – Redskins. The list goes on and on.
Your comment is unvalidated Tom. You should check before making such stupid statements.
You musty be kidding. this is a NON-STORY.
What MORON would even try to make this type of thing up?
Puhleeeze!
Talk abuot looking for anything to make news worthy.
I think it would be wrong to give up on colt so quickly.Have we forgotten that he has been playing with the third team offensive line, which has not blocked for him. Most of those guys won’t even make the team.Lets see what Colt can do with the second or first team before we judge him.I think colt has all the intangables to be a great QB,but lets give him a chance people.Look what they said about drew breeze when he first came into the league, and look at him now.gO Colt!Let’s not give up on James Davis either, remember he missed pretty much all of last season..
His “DADDY” is not in training camp to help him.
LOL I said it and you heard it!!!
Send colt to dallas we will take him. Romo is the one who needs to go.
“white trash” I can only wonder what he would be called if he was “black.” This is a sad representation of bigot who has no class “judging” someone else. Colt McCoy is a tremendous QB with untapped NFL talent. I agree, send him back to TX and let him lead the ‘Boys to another superbowl!
