Cleveland Browns NFL Draft Projections: Browns Bolster Defensive Line In Second Round
The path to the draft is officially upon us and it is time to take a look at the direction that the Cleveland Browns will be taking this off-season. Every two days, I will break down a new round starting with the seventh and working up to the top. Keep checking in for new updates and information as more rounds are added!
Greetings Browns Fans! Before we get into Cleveland’s projections for the second round here is a recap of how the other rounds have played out so far:
Sixth Round Pick 5, 165th Overall: Jeremy Kerley, WR TCU
Sixth Round Pick 3, 163rd Overall: Scott Lutrus, ILB, UCONN
Fifth Round Pick 6, 134th Overall: Pernell McPhee, DE, Mississippi State
Fourth Round Pick 5, 101st Overall: Greg McElroy, QB, Alabama
Third Round Pick 6, 70th Overall: Brandon Burton, CB Utah
With the 37th pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, the Cleveland Browns select Stephen Paea, DT, Oregon State.
Stephen Paea is a physical phenom. He has already made headlines all around the NFL after setting the NFL Combine record for bench press repetitions but was limited by a knee injury in many other drills. Cleveland needs help at both in the interior and exterior of the defensive line and even though Paea played nose tackle in college, is slightly undersized and would suit the NFL better as a defensive tackle.
With this pick, the Browns would have Athyba Rubin and Stephen Paea plugging up the middle of their defensive line but will still be weak on the ends as Matt Roth is currently a free agent and Marcus Bernard is still not a dominant force. Cleveland does have options with this pick as their will be defensive ends on the board, they may also look into trading their first round selection away in order to obtain more linemen.
Paea recorded 127 tackles and 13 sacks in three seasons with the Beavers.

What is this the all worst case scenario draft projection? Other the Burton (who is a cross between Eric Wright and Richard Marshall…question is which one is he more like) and maybe Lutrus, I don’t like one player on this list. Paea is only a mauler. He is strong, but he has horrible instincts due to the fact that he did not grow up with the game…he was a rugby player. He is not a pass rusher or a dominant run stopper (though his run stopping abilities are better than many others in the draft). WHen was the last time the winner of the bench at the combine went on to do anything? He has nagging injuries that keep him from being on the field as much as he could be though he does not miss games. He is a run stoppper (ish) but isn’t that Rubin’s specialty? Why get two when it would be better to grab a guy that can collapse the pocket from the interior? He reminds me of former DT Chris Hovan.
I agree Paea would be an excellent selection in the second round, ive watched alot of tape on him and he shows me more than Marvin Austin does so i like him a lil more…I wouldnt mind Drake Nevis ethier who could be there in the 3rd but i see the Bears grabbing him with there late 2nd…
