Cleveland Browns: Why Cleveland Should Consider Signing Cedric Benson
Cedric Benson has been a consistent force for the rival Cincinnati Bengals for many seasons but with free agency looming this summer, the Browns should be looking towards giving Peyton Hillis some backfield help with a familiar face.
Benson has put up some solid numbers with Cincinnati and has improved every season while with the team. In 2009-10 and 2010-11 he enjoyed his first 1,000 yard seasons and took 13 balls in for scores. Cleveland simply does not have a solid backup option behind Peyton Hillis and there have even been talks about the Browns possibly using Hillis in more of a fullback style role.
Benson has a similar rushing style to Hillis as they both tend to bull over defenders rather than juke or spin. However, Benson may be slightly quicker on his feet as he has a tendency to break more tackles.
The Browns will likely be involved in the running back pool of free agency if the team fails to draft a runner this April. Cleveland has already had a workout with Shane Vereen of California and plans to meet with Ryan Williams and Mark Ingram before the draft.
