Shin-Soo Choo Wins Asian Games, Exempt from Military Service
[picappgallerysingle id="10239813"]
It’s official: Shin-Soo Choo will not have to enlist in the South Korean army.
The law in Choo’s native country requires all able-bodied men to serve two years in the military before age 30—a fact that has been creating nightmares in the back of Cleveland fans’ minds for years.
But athletes who take home the gold at the quadrennial Asian Games earn exemptions from military service, and Choo is now off the hook after leading the Korean team to its third victory in the the last four tournaments.
Even without the Asian Games, it seemed unlikely that he would actually have to serve his term; the Korean government could have waived the requirement for Choo, who is immensely popular in his homeland, or he could have applied for American citizenship to prolong his playing career.
But now we can breathe a sigh of relief. He’s not going anywhere.
For what it’s worth, Choo went 8-for-14 with three homers, 11 RBI, and six walks in the games.

Deep congratulations on the exemption of Military Service for
Shin-Soo Choo by the winning of the Asian Game!
Also, I want to ask him to do his bests for his team of Cleveland Indians without any yoke of heavy burden of military service.
Looking forward to hearing good scores of the team in 2011, I do
really remain.
