MLB Trade Deadline: Cleveland Indians Acquire Kosuke Fukudome, Still Not Done?
The Indians made a splash Thursday by acquiring Kosuke Fukudome from the Chicago Cubs. It’s not the biggest trade we’ve seen this week and a number of higher-profile players are still on the market, but he’s a definite improvement in right field and any attempt to upgrade at the trade deadline is newsworthy after three consecutive July fire sales.
But the biggest news out of Cleveland isn’t that Fukudome will be suiting up at Progressive Field—it’s that the Indians aren’t done.
“Still working to improve the team with other additions,” team President Mark Shapiro tweeted Thursday afternoon. “We feel [the Fukudome deal] will help us but hope to make others as well.”
Specifically, the Indians are looking into upgrading their rotation. They’re still in on Hiroki Kuroda (assuming he would accept a trade to Cleveland) and Ubaldo Jimenez, as well as Jeremy Guthrie.
They might not be done upgrading their lineup, either. Cleveland is still in on Jamey Carroll, and they’re still chasing another outfielder: former Indian Ryan Ludwick.
Even if the Indians don’t make a blockbuster deal, there’s still work to be done.
