The term “once in a generation” is an understatement when applied to Aledo High School (Texas) running back Johnathan Gray. A senior, Gray has broken almost every Texas and national high school football record. His Aledo Bearcats won the Texas Class 4AAAA Division II state championship a year ago at Cowboys Stadium. Gray scored eight touchdowns in that contest. I had the pleasure of attending part of that game. Take a look at this kid’s numbers:

Through eight games in 2011, Gray has 1,990 rushing yards, which gives him 8,993 for his career. He’s currently 12th all-time, trailing leader Ken Hall (Sugar Land, Texas), who boasts the record of 11,232 yards.

To break that record, Gray will need Aledo to return to the state championship this year while averaging almost 300 yards per game along the way. That seems impossible, but Gray’s eight touchdowns in the title game last year broke Hall’s most touchdowns in a single season record. Never say never, especially with this kid.

Gray trails former Indianapolis Colts running back Michael Hart (Nedrow Onondaga, New York) in both career touchdowns and career points. Gray is currently on both lists at No. 3, behind Hart and T.A. McLendon (Albemarle, North Carolina).

Gray has 176 career touchdowns, two behind McLendon and 28 behind Hart. If Aledo returns to the state championship, Gray will likely break Hart’s record.

With 1,052 career points, Gray trails McLendon by 24 and Hart by 194. It will take 33 more touchdowns by Gray to break Hart’s record, so Gray will need to score at least four touchdowns in each contest and Aledo will need to return to the title game for him to reach that mark.

I know you’re dying to find out where Gray is going to attend college next fall. He has committed to play football for the University of Texas. If you haven’t seen him play yet, you will.
