When a football team is holding on to a lead late in the fourth quarter and they have the chance to run the clock out, the smart thing to do is run out the clock instead of trying to put more points on the scoreboard. Unfortunately for one high school football team, they had to learn this the hard way and the worst thing is–it happened during the state playoffs.

The video above shows Woodward (Okla.) High pulling off a shocking upset over Douglass (Okla.) High thanks to a 99-yard fumble return for a touchdown with less than a minute to play. Douglass was up 19-14 on the Woodward one-yard line and decided to go for the touchdown instead of running the clock out–which obviously backfired on their end–and went on to lose the game 20-19 thanks to their selfish decision.

The funny thing is, Douglass was the defending state champions and pretty much dominated Woodward for the entire game–so this loss has to be painful to deal with. This is why it’s always safe to run the clock out instead of being selfish by adding more points on the scoreboard.
