BREAKING: Ryan Madson to Sign One-Year Deal with Cincinnati Reds

Ryan Madson is now off the free agent market. The former Phillies closer is expected to sign a one-year contract with the Cincinnati Reds, according Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com. The exact terms of the deal have not yet been released.

While closing out games in Philadelphia last season, the 31-year-old saved 32 games in 34 chances. The former ninth round pick had a 2.37 ERA and struck out 62 hitters in 60.2 innings on a Phillies squad that had a very disappointing end to their season.

In Cincinnati, Madson will replace Francisco Cordero, who has been the Reds closer since 2008. Over the last four seasons, Cordero saved 150 games, one of the better totals in the National League. Cordero is currently looking to sign elsewhere and isn’t expected to be back in Cincinnati with Madson now in the ninth inning role.

For Madson, signing a one-year deal makes sense. If he stays healthy, he could have a huge season in 2012 on a Reds team that is looking to win a wide open NL Central and Madson would then be in store for big money come next offseason.
