Will Dennis Allen be the Next Head Coach for the Oakland Raiders?
Ron Chenoy-US PRESSWIRE

According to ESPN, newly appointed Oakland Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie has his eyes locked on Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Dennis Allen.

Several candidates including Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg, Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Mike Tice, Green Bay Packers linebackers coach Winston Moss and defensive coordinator Dom Capers have been informed they are no longer in the running.

It is assumed Mornhinweg, Tice and Capers will remain at their current positions with their respected teams while Moss could still be searching for a defensive coordinator job. His best shot would be with the Miami Dolphins where the position is still available. Former Packer offensive coordinator Joe Philbin was recently hired as the Dolphins head coach so this could be a good fit for both of them.

Allen has been coaching in the NFL since 2002 where he started as a defensive assistant/quality control coach with the Atlanta Falcons. In 2006 he became the assistant defensive line coach for the New Orleans Saints and in 2008 was promoted to the secondary coach. He was hired by the Broncos this past season where they ranked 18th in opponent passing yards and 22nd in opponent rushing yards. Denver also ranked 10th in the league in sacks.

Allen is a solid young coach who has a bend but don’t break defensive mentality. Basically, his defense will give up plenty of yards but sacks and turnovers should make up for it. In the Wild-Card game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Broncos surrendered 400 yards of total offense and recorded one interception.

Interesting Notes: The last Raiders head coach with a defensive background was John Madden, who was hired in 1969. The last Oakland head coach that was hired from the Broncos coaching staff was Mike Shanahan in 1988. He would of course be hired back by Denver to be the head coach in 1995 where he went on to win two Super Bowls.
