Rumor: Could Jahvid Best’s NFL Career Be Over Before It Even Began?
Andrew Weber-US PRESSWIRE

Over the past 24 hours there’s been a rumor regarding the status of Detroit Lions running back Jahvid Best.  The rumor is indicating that the Lions organization fears that the concussion that Best suffered on October 16th while playing the San Francisco 49ers could likely end his NFL career.

According to Mike Florio’s article titled “Report: Many in Lions Organization Fear That Jahvid Best’s Career is Over”  Best has indicated that he’ll “definitely” be back for the 2012. Yet, Florio speculates that the reason Best’s career is in question is due to the National Football League’s attention to the dangers of concussions and because Best as a running back will take more punishment.

While those are both great points, what’s more concerning though is that even before Best was drafted he had an injury history while at the University of California. In Best’s freshman year his season was cut short due to an injured hip. In his sophomore year in which he had one of the best seasons in California history he still found himself injured, this time dislocating an elbow after diving to stretch for a touchdown.

Best’s worst injury came as a junior. Facing the Oregon State Beavers at home and with California trailing, Best took a direct snap leaped for the touchdown and as he was crossing the goal line was pushed higher into the air and landed on his back and the California crowd went from celebrating the touchdown to stunned silence.

With the history of injuries Best decided to enter the 2010 NFL Draft and was selected as the 30th pick by the Lions. It was a gamble to take him at that spot and after his first two games Best silenced those critics as he scored five touchdowns (four rushing and one receiving).

Yet, in the third game of the season Best suffered a toe injury that put him into a slump as he only found the end zone once after suffering the injury.  The 2011 season for Best started out strong running the football and catching the football and then against the 49ers suffered a concussion forcing him to miss the last 10 games of the season.

In college and now in the NFL Best has suffered a number of injuries and it’s not surprising to see the rumors that Best’s career may be over before it even got started. Yet, Best could decide to play like he has indicated, he could choose to sit out one season and make sure he is 100 percent healthy or he could decide that the best course of action for himself is to move on from the NFL.

The best thing for Best to do though is to really look at the pros and cons of remaining in the NFL because the decision he makes also has an impact on his future health.
