It's Better To Be Lucky Than Good

US PRESSWIRE

The 2011-12 New York Giants are Super Bowl Champions. That can never be taken away from them, just as their previous Super Bowl can never be taken away. In a sports almanac, it won't have an asterisk next to their championships, nor should there be. They didn't cheat, they didn't do anything illegal, they beat everyone in front of them, but that doesn't make them the best team in the sport.

I know I am in the minority on this, but the "championship" team doesn't mean the best team to me. It never has been and never will be. I have been a fan two teams that are considered lucky from their championship runs. The 2005 Chicago White Sox and the 2010 Green Bay Packers.

While the 2005 Chicago White Sox were a complete fluke, they were a great team in that season. They went wire-to-wire, and only lost one game in that entire post-season. The 2010 Green Bay Packers were lucky to get in the post-season, which is very similar to the New York Giants. And in the playoffs, the Packers got more breaks, like facing Todd Collins and Caleb Hanie for a majority of the NFC Championship game.

I can certainly understand how some fans say those two teams weren't the best that season; more so the Packers than the White Sox, but I digress.

These 15 teams are champions forever. But in the terms of greatness, that is one characterization they will never be.

***Hater Alert*** if you are easily offended by criticism about your favorite team, this might not be the slideshow for you.

  1. Bill Kennedy says:

Yes, but….they were defending NBA Champions at the time…

Also, they beat the #1 #2 and #3 seeded teams to get to those finals and beat the team with the best record in the eastern conference to repeat!

  2. dufuskiller says:

this is a typical comment on N. C. State that year. they were NOT a bad team lucky enough to win. what NO ONE ever seems to remember is that Whittenburg was out for 15 games during the regular season, a stretch that State went 8-7 making the record LOOK just awful. but once he came back, they didn’t lose another game. sooo….it was a team with a mediocre record that did NOT reflect how good they were. then they promptly began to show just how good they REALLY were! so there! HA!

  3. frogtank says:

Worst Professional Championship Teams: Any teams that did not win their division did not deserve to evem be in a Championship Game. Eliminate the ridiculous Wild Card Teams and have a true Championship Game. That would eliminate ALL “worst teams” in professional sports championships.

    • JS69 says:

Wow. What a bunch of haters and crybabies. Let’s all root for Darth Vader and the 1980 USSR hockey team.

Except for being force-fed the BCS, every team here was exactly why the playoffs are the way they are. I give a rat’s a** if a team went 0-whatever and then won every game left in the season to make the playoffs. They deserve the championship if the so-called “better” team can’t beat them. With the logic flying around on some of these posts, 99% of the kids playing sports today should quit because they’ll never be “good” enough. Pathetic

  4. Evan says:

I like this list, but not because it emphasizes successes of unworthy teams. It should be appreciated for exactly the opposite reason. “Bad” championship teams are exactly what athletic competition is all about. Underdog teams that play with heart and win championships are what makes competition so captivating and so great. If the Yankees and the Patriots won every season, what a boring world this would be. Sure, some luck is usually involved when a team makes a surprising run to the championship, but luck is always involved in sports; those teams that play with heart and resolve, and are able to seize those lucky moments are the ones that deserve to win. Luck does not negate skill. (Disclaimer: shameless fan pitch ahead) The 2011 St. Louis Cardinals are a prime example. After an inauspicious, injury-ridden start to the season, they managed to seize lucky break after lucky break to propel them to the Wildcard over the Braves in the last game of the regular season and eventually the World Series title. Of course the team had skill, but it was heart (and no shortage of lucky breaks) that led them to success through perhaps the most exciting championship run in recent sports memory. Forever to the underdog!

    Sincerely,
    A Very Proud Cardinals Fan

  5. JaySin says:

“Did every single team that they played in the last 7 weeks have their worst games of the season?”

Yea that’s what happens when you play the most dominant defensive line in the NFL in years.

  6. sp says:

Part of being the best is winning when it matters. If you have a lot of talent, yet lack the heart to win in the playoffs, you are not a champion.

  7. dcut says:

You know there’s a product called photoshop which will let you alter the size of photos without distorting or stretching them. As a quasi-professional web publishing outfit, you might want to consider picking up a copy at your local staples before publishing another slideshow.

  8. Mauldo says:

The 2011 Giants, the worst champion ever. This article is a joke. Where are the 2010 duke blue devils, that team had the easist run to a title that I have ever seen?

  9. Sean says:

What a douche, I’m sure the gaints are such a horrible team, oh wait, they won the superbowl, you patriot loving f*g.
Anyway, i’m a saints fan but the gaints won because they played their best game, ever game.
Thats what makes a champion you dumb***, no one else deserved it cause they couldn’t play when they needed to.
Thats the beauty of the NFL, you got ONE shot
Stupid how in baseball, you can lose 3 times and be a world champion

  10. bigd says:

    Learnee writee spellee Ingrish

  11. Dennis says:

this is a joke, you just wasted my time to see what your #1 team was. The giants…get real…quit writing and get a job if you can

  12. Mike says:

Eli Manning is the best Qb in the NFL try me on that. There is no question the Giants are not the best team in the NFL, but to say they are one of the worst teams to win a championship. Learn the facts my man the only reason the New York Giants did not go just near close to undefeated is because they record breaking injuries during the regular season. They got healthy and played when it mattered. Sorry Brady can’t finish, who cares if you can throw 4000 in the regular season you play like Brady did this post you will never get another ring so hop off.

  13. Bret says:

The logic of this list confuses me…how is the 84 BYU team better than the 07 LSU team….there is no way. The worst “championship” team on this list is the BYU team…they didn’t play anyone…not even a lame BCS championship game. At least the other teams had to win in a playoff system. Not sure I would agree with NYG being the worst championship team of all time either. All the baseball teams listed were very weak “champions”.

  14. David says:

    dude…you are an idiot.

  15. alberto garcia says:

that shows you that sports it’s not only for the bunch of millionaires that play without heart and passion for the sport

  16. J.C. says:

“With a Jordanless Eastern Conference, the Rockets took on the inexperienced Orlando Magic in the NBA finals, sweeping them in four games.”

WRONG! Jordan returned before the playoffs. Jordan fanatics never remember that.

  17. Brian says:

How did the 1987 Redskins not even make the list? They should be #1. In (another) NFL Strike year they win 3 of their division games with replacement players. Barely squeek by Chicago in the playoffs even though Jim McMahon throws 3 picks and play a Denver Broncos team that had 1 decent player out of 53 (Elway).

  18. John P8 says:

I think it was the 1982-1983 NC State team that won the championship. And their first round win was in double OT against Pepperdine. Just FYI.

  19. Stevenson says:

    Sony
I’m suffering a Pats, Packs, Niners, and Saints lost syndrome Ny Giants. please, quickly take them to Canyon of heroes prescribe them some lombardi pills and a cup of big apple juice. if they are not feeling better, let me know so I can increase the dosage. I want you guys to take one lombardi pill everyday until next year. I wish everyone a good and speedy recovery. Thanks

  20. Zach says:

This list can not be complete without the addition of the Fresno State baseball team… the equivalent of a 13 seed or higher going on to win it all, they were barely over .500 and werent even the best team in their own mediocre conference!
