According to excerpts from his former swing coach Hank Haney’s new book, Tiger Woods seriously considered quitting golf to pursue a career as a Navy SEAL.

Yes, you read that correctly.

Golf Digest posted excerpts from the yet to be released book titled, “Big Miss: My Year’s Coaching Tiger Woods” detailing personal conversations Haney had with Woods describing his extreme interest in the elite military program.

“Tiger was seriously considering becoming a Navy SEAL. I didn’t know how he’d go about it, but when he talked about it, it was clear he had a plan . . . I thought, Wow, here is Tiger Woods, greatest athlete on the planet, maybe the greatest athlete ever, right in the middle of his prime, basically ready to leave it all behind for a military life.”

In his book, Haney never specified at what point Tiger was willing to give up his golf career to pursue the military unit but it’s assumed it was during 2004-2008 when Haney was his swing coach.

Another excerpt talked about Tiger’s trip to Fort Bragg and the impression it left on him:

“Tiger did two tandem parachute jumps, engaged in hand-to-hand combat exercises, went on four-mile runs wearing combat boots, and did drills in a wind tunnel. Tiger loved it, but his physical therapist, Keith Kleven, went a little crazy worrying about the further damage Tiger might be doing to his left knee . . . One morning I was in the kitchen when he came back from a long run around Isleworth, and I noticed he was wearing Army boots. Tiger admitted that he’d worn the heavy shoes before on the same route. ‘I beat my best time,’ he said.”

Tiger did have some sort of military familiarity due to his father Earl’s 20-year service including stints in Vietnam. Still it would have been unprecedented to have the most dominant golfer of his time just drop the game and pursue a Navy SEAL career. Tiger definitely had the build to be in the military and was probably athletic enough to adjust quickly to the regiments but it still would have been unthinkable.

After everything that happened with Tiger and his personal life drama maybe a military career could have set him straight. But I guess we’ll never know.
