Ryan Braun Defense Being Used by Suspended Denver Broncos
Jerry Lai-US PRESSWIRE

When Ryan Braun’s suspension for a positive urine test was overturned on February 23 on the basis of a technicality, it was a near certainty that the precedent-setting decision would have an almost immediate effect on the way testing was conducted. However, I’m not sure anybody expected it to have an effect on other leagues this quickly.

Multiple news outlets are reporting that Denver Broncos Ryan McBean and D.J. Williams are set to sue the NFL for allegedly mishandling samples that were said to have been tainted with “non-human” urine. McBean, Williams, and representatives from the NFLPA all claim that multiple breaches of collection protocol were committed during procedures to collect the  samples of the two aforementioned players.

The NFL announced on Friday that both players would be suspended for the first six games of the 2012 season. At this point, it’s quite clear that the overturned suspension of Ryan Braun, regardless of reasonable doubt, is going to make steroid testing an arduous process throughout professional sports and a major obstacle in future collective bargaining.
