The Wisconsin Badgers moved on to the second round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament with ease after defeating the Montana Grizzlies 73-49.

Five Badger players were in double-digit scoring led by senior forward Ryan Evans who finished with 18 points and shot 80 percent from the field. Jordan Taylor, John Gasser, Mike Bruesewitz, and Rob Wilson were the other four players to do so.

The Badgers as a team converted 47.9 percent from the field, 52.6 percent from behind the arc and 89.5 percent from the foul line. I stated in my preview of this game that whichever team could make more three-pointers would come out victorious and that statement holds true as the Badgers made 10 three’s to the Grizzlies three.

Montana played well at times but the nation’s number one scoring defense was simply too much for the Grizzlies. Montana only managed to convert 38.3 percent from the field, 33.3 percent from the three and 66.7 percent from the free throw line. For a team that moves down the court with authority and ranks in the top 50 with a 46.5 percent field goal percentage they sure did not act like it.

Wisconsin’s defense suffocated shooters with an intense man-to-man coverage. The Grizzlies were able to score a majority of their points in the paint early on but Jared Berggren’s seven blocks forced Montana to attempt outside shots which did not go in their favor. Another huge factor in the victory was the Badgers ability to out-rebound the Grizzlies 32-19.

Montana brought the ballgame within five after Shawn Stockton made a layup with 3:05 left in the first half. However, the Badgers defense clamped down and did not allow the Grizzlies to convert another field goal until the 12:35 mark in the second half. At that point the lead was ten and would only increase for the rest of the game as Wisconsin went on to win by 26 points.

The Badgers will take on the winner of the Harvard and Vanderbilt game on Saturday.
