Back on Mar. 9, Illinois fired head coach Bruce Weber.
Since then, the coaching search for a replacement has carried on and its been VCU’s Shaka Smart leading the early speculation into who would replace Weber.
VCU, who was eliminated in the Round of 32 this past weekend at the hands of Indiana, is seemingly moving forward into yet another off-season.
So too, is their head coach Shaka Smart.
This afternoon, a pair of tweets, one from CBS Sports Network’s Jon Rothstein and the other from CBSSports.com’s Gary Parrish, indicated that Smart may in fact, be staying put.
This, despite the heavy rumors of Illinois’ high interest level.
Gary Parrish tweeted this:
Breaking news: Shaka Smart is spending this afternoon … on the road. Recruiting. For VCU.

While Jon Rothstein had this to say:
Sources confirm that unless something drastic changes in the next 24 hours, Shaka Smart will stay at VCU…..

So, let the speculation continue.
Is Illinois still planning on targeting Smart? Or is the 34-year old head coach set to remain at VCU?
