Tony Hawk hasn’t done it. Shaun White hasn’t done it, either. In fact, no skateboarder has ever done it, but, it’s finally been done, the elusive 1080 (that’s three complete mid-air spins) has finally been landed – by a 12-year-old kid.

Tom Schaar aided by a small frame, larger ramp and desire to get it done pulled it off. Schaar, is a sixth-grader, grew up skating with his older brother, John, in Malibu, CA. California is a hotbed for skateboarding, with it’s plethora of skate parks and pros.

Schaar grew up skating on a small vert ramp in their back yard, but the kid’s skill level quickly outgrew any small backyard ramps and he soon moved on to bigger and better things. He got so good, so fast that multiple X-Games medalist Bucky Lasek took a liking to the kid and started working with him.

As a result, Schaar pulled off a move only the most seasoned pros have ever dreamed off. Prior to the groundbreaking move only Tony Hawk had ever come this close. Hawk, is by far the greatest vert ramp skater in history and it took him ten tries to land, “The 900″ at the 1999 X-Games.

How many attempts did it take for the pre-pubescent skateboard phenom to pull off the 1080? How about five…that’s right, he did the hardest trick in the world in half the time of one of skateboarding’s biggest legends. Now that is a story eventually worth sharing with the grand-kids.

I skateboarded for many years and would have never even dreamed a trick like this was possible. I’m still in shock that it’s even been done. In my opinion video games have played a major role in the sheer degree of difficulty in the tricks being done today. It’s almost like if a kid can do it with a controller, he figures, “How hard can this really be to do outside?

Apparently, it’s no longer as hard at it once was. Watch for Schaar in the upcoming X-Games and hold onto your seat because this kids just getting started.
