Photo: NCAA 13 Cover Features Robert Griffin III and Barry Sanders
The cover photo for EA Sports NCAA Football 13 has been released and it features two previous Heisman Trophy winners from the Big 12 in Robert Griffin III and Barry Sanders. Here is the first look at the new cover for next season:
The former Baylor Bears quarterback won last year’s Heisman after posting gaudy numbers through the air and on the ground. Griffin passed for over 4,000 yards and threw 37 TD’s while adding 10 more touchdowns using his legs. Fellow Big XII alum Barry Sanders is also featured on the cover after a fan vote was taken to determine RGIII’s cover partner. Sanders ended up beating out Herschel Walker to secure the cover appearance. He won the Heisman back in 1988 with Oklahoma State by breaking 25 NCAA records, at the time, and posting the most impressive statistic from that season averaging over 200 yards per game on the ground.
Sanders was one of the greatest running backs to ever play the game and was by far the shiftiest. Watching video of him running around defenders, juking defenders and running through defenders is something that never gets old. At the college level it was almost unfair for him to suit up every week especially in that memorable 1988 season. He ran for 2,628 yards, 39 TD’s and broke the all-time rushing record in route to an almost unanimous 1st place vote for the Heisman.
I think it is a really cool idea to feature last year’s Heisman winner alongside a historic player that won the award in the past. Madden featured two players on the cover back in 2010 with Troy Polamalu and Larry Fitzgerald and I think fans enjoyed switching it up from the usual single player on the cover.
Luckily for Griffin the NCAA Football cover does not have a supposed jinx like the Madden Cover does but if he can live up to the hype, he may just find himself on the cover of the NFL video game. Fans of the team that drafts him can breathe easy until then.
