In Italian soccer this weekend, young Roma midfielder Erik Lamela, originally from Argentina, played in a game against Serie A leaders Juventus.

His team collapsed to a heavy 4-0 defeat during this game and Juventus’ player Stephan Lichsteiner let the Argentine know, in no uncertain terms, just what the score was. Lamela took exception to the hand gestures and decided to spit on the Swiss defender’s garish pink jersey.

This would have undoubtedly infuriated the player, but he kept his cool and saw out the rest of the game. Now it has been officially announced that Serie A’s disciplinary commission have banned Lamela for Roma’s next three games against Fiorentina, Napoli and Chievo.

He will be available for the Roman side’s final two matches, but the damage is already done. Roma sit in 6th in the division, only one point behind Napoli. It is plausible that they could climb all the way up to third in the remaining games, overtaking bitter rivals S.S. Lazio, whom they share the Stadio Olimpico with in the Italian capital.

However, at this stage of the season you need as many fit and available players as possible to take on the final run. Roma have a chance in all the games they have left, but Lamela has made it that little bit harder.

Juventus, on the other hand, are peaking at the right time. They are only three points ahead of giants AC Milan, in second, and the two will be gunning to win the Serie A trophy, the Scudetto.

Perhaps they will be tickled pink at the end of the season, crowned Italy’s best soccer side once again. As for Lamela, who knows what Roma’s ultras make of his stupidity…
