Olympic Torch Goes Out During Devon Relay; Quickly Restarted

The Olympic torch is on its journey to London for the Olympic Games, but it suffered a brief mishap on Monday.  David Follet was carrying the torch on his wheelchair when the wind briefly blew the flame out.  After a couple of seconds, the flame was re-lit and everyone went on their merry way.

This is the first time that I have heard of the Olympic torch going out.  I’ve heard that it is a common occurrence but this might be the first time that we have video of the incident.  Some quick thinking occurred and the torch was re-lit without any issues.  Nice job of thinking on their feet.

Luckily, there is also a mother flame in case they weren’t able to get the flame back going.  Imagine how embarrassing that would be to have the Olympic torch go out on your watch.  I don’t know if that country could ever show their face again.  You would be the laughing stock of the world.  Countries that wouldn’t even have access to the Olympics would be laughing.

The Olympics are quickly approaching and it should be a great time.  I think London is well prepared to host the games, even with a torch mishap or two.  It could always be worse.  At least no one caught on fire with the torch.  I’d rather have the Olympic torch go out than set someone fire.  That would be a horrible PR nightmare to deal with.
