In Honor Of Dan Wheldon, Dario Franchitti Wins The 2012 Indianapolis 500

By Riley Schmitt

Dario Franchitti became a three time winner of the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday in an exciting race.  Franchitti spent the week talking about how big of a presence that fallen Indy driver Dan Wheldon would be and Franchitti brought home the title in honor of his friend.

Dario Franchitti spent most of the race up front and had one of the best cars in the entire race.  He battled with teammate Scott Dixon all race.  He finally passed Dixon with two laps to go to lead the race to the end.  This was a great race to watch with a ton of passing late in the race.

Takuma Sato tried to give Dario Franchitti a run for his money, but as he dove under him, he spun out.  This brought out the caution which clinched the victory for Ganassi and Franchitti.  There are very few people that have won the 500 three times, so Dario is in some great company.

Ever since Wheldon died in an accident last year, a cloud has hung over the Indy Car series.  I think having one of the best friends of Wheldon in Dario Franchitti win the race is a big thing for the sport.  He is one of the best drivers in the series so I am happy to see him win.  It takes talent to start at the back and win the race, but he did it.

Congratulations to Dario Franchitti on becoming a three time winner of the Indianapolis 500.
