Pennsylvania School Board Member Patty Sexton Wants To Ban High School Football

By Riley Schmitt

Patty Sexton is about to find herself in the news a lot in the coming days.  She is a school board member in the Council Rock School District in Pennsylvania and she is also a teacher.  She is going to become Internet famous because she wants to ban high school football.

“It’s no longer appropriate for public institutions to fund gladiators,” she said. “I am very, very concerned about putting these student-athletes in the position of getting a concussion. Football has gotten faster, harder and more dangerous with each passing year. I’m extremely scared we will eventually be sued over injuries suffered in sports.”

Here’s the thing.  I understand football is a dangerous sport and concussions are awful.  I have had three or four concussions from playing football.  It sucks, but I would not replace my time playing football with anything.  People are always going to want to play.  I honestly think the lawsuits are a joke.  If you did not think that you were going to get hurt playing a violent sport, that is your fault.

Patty Sexton might have the best interests of students in mind, but banning football is not going to do that.  That is overstepping the boundaries.  If parents are good parents, they will outline the pros and cons of football to their kids.  If the kids still want to play, they should be allowed to play.  Getting rid of the option of football is just going too far in my opinion.
