Euro 2012: Danny Welbeck’s Amazing Goal vs. Sweden

The Euro 2012 tournament continued today and we likely saw the goal of the tournament from England’s Danny Welbeck:

That’s one hell of a goal. The casual soccer fan might not understand just how tough of a goal that actually is. To be able to stop, turn and strike the ball out of mid-air with your heel and be accurate with it is just unbelievable. The cross from Theo Walcott was not to be overlooked as well as he placed it only where Welbeck could get a foot on it.

Danny Welbeck’s amazing goal gave England the 3-2 lead that eventually gave them the win and the three points to put them in prime position to advance out of the group stage. England’s first competitive win over Sweden in turn eliminated the Swedes from the tournament and sets up an interesting final day in Group D.

Both France and England both have four points while the co-hosts Ukraine have three points. England and Ukraine will face-off on Tuesday to decide who gets to advance to the elimination rounds.

So far this has been a very entertaining Euro 2012 and with goals like this what’s there not to like? I know that soccer/futbol is not the most popular sport in the U.S. due to the NFL and MLB but soccer is just as entertaining and provides thrilling moments like we saw today. Some fans just say they get bored watching the games but seeing a goal like that makes the anticipation worth the wait. It does seem though that every four years when the USMNT is involved in the World Cup America takes notice and supports the game the rest of the world loves.
