Rory McIlroy Drives Ball Off Kid’s Head At 2012 British Open

Rory McIlroy has shown a great ability to scramble in his golf career.  On Hole 15 at the 2012 British Open, McIlroy shanked his drive and it smoked a spectator right in the head.  The ball went out of bounds and McIlroy had to re-tee.  He ended up double bogeying the hole.

I bet that kid has a sore spot for days.  Luckily for him, he was okay and Rory McIlroy decided to give him a signed golf glove for his troubles.  Not a lot of good can come out of taking a golf shot to the head but this has to come out to a net positive for this kid.  He gets a signed glove and he was on TV for a little bit.  Sounds like a good plan to me.

The fact that Rory did not absolutely tank the hole is a testament to how good he is.  Not a lot of people can recover from shooting a ball off of a guy’s dome and having it go out of bounds.  Getting a double bogey off of that is incredible to me.  If that was me on the course, I would have been mad at the kid for not re-directing the ball back in bounds.  Probably would have followed that up with a club throw and another drive or two out of bounds.

This kid got his five minutes of fame and souvenir that he will have for a lifetime.  That lump on his head will eventually go away but he did get a signed glove out of it.
